rainSynopsis & Timing

Early this morning (6 am) a slow moving cold front extended across southeast Georgia with waves of rainfall, some moderate to heavy at times, along and trailing the front. Isolated, non-severe, embedded thunderstorms were observed occasionally within the rainfall, with the most thunderstorm activity near Apalachee Bay. Through day today, the cold front and associated rainfall will steadily press southward overspreading northeast Florida into the afternoon. By late afternoon into the early evening, rainfall will tapper off across SE Ga and then exit to the south of our Florida zones around midnight tonight. Cooler and drier air will filter in tonight, with a surge in northerly winds expected to impact the coastal waters Friday.

Potential Impacts

  • Thunderstorm Outlook: There is a low chance of isolated thunderstorms today. Severe storms are not expected at this time. Lightning and locally heavy rainfall will be the main thunderstorm hazards.
  • Rainfall: Widespread rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches are expected today, with isolated higher amounts. Waves of the heaviest rainfall are expected this morning across SE GA and the Suwannee River Valley, the heavier rainfall potential shifts southward across the remainder of northeast Florida this afternoon and early this evening. Minor temporary flooding is expected at times.
  • Marine: Strong northerly winds will trail the frontal passage this evening with Small Craft Advisory conditions over both the near and outer waters. Gusts to gale force are possible tonight over the outer waters where a Gale Watch is in effect. An extended period of Small Craft Advisory conditions are expected Friday through early next week.
  • Coastal Impacts: Moderate risk of rip currents today. High Risk expected Friday and potentially Saturday. Rough surf with breakers of 5-7 ft are possible Friday especially along the St. Johns and Flagler County coasts.

The Moody KVAX Doppler measured 2-3.5 inches along and north of Baxley to Pearson.
