9-1-1 Professional of the Day 2011

As part of our 9-1-1 Education Month / National Public Safety Telecommunications Week activities, Ware County wants to recognize the dedication and outstanding efforts of the individuals who make the 9-1-1 system work every day. By putting a few faces to the numbers, we hope that the public will gain an increased understanding and appreciation of 9-1-1 – a service most people take for granted.

Featured 9-1-1 Professional:
Patrice Harris,
Senior Communications Officer/Training Officer

Interviewer: If you could convey one message to the public, what would it be?
Harris: Any situation that requires 9-1-1 is, by definition, an emergency. The Call-Taker knows that and will try to move things along quickly, but under control.
I would like to offer Helpful Tips to the public:

  1. Know the location (address, intersection, business, landmark etc) of the emergency and know the number you are calling from. This may be asked and answered a couple of times but don’t get frustrated. Even though many 9-1-1 centers have enhanced capabilities – meaning they are able to see your address on the computer screen – they are still required to confirm the information.
  2. Allow the Communications Officer to guide the conversation, there is certain information required to process the call for service so that the appropriate personnel can be dispatched to assist you.
  3. If you are in danger of assault etc, the dispatcher will still need you to answer quietly, mostly “yes” and “no” questions. It may seem like it is taking forever, but just remember that another dispatcher has dispatched the call to emergency personnel while the Call-Taker is on the phone with you.
  4. Follow instructions given to you by the Communications Officer. Listen carefully, and follow each step exactly ask for clarification if you don’t understand.
  5. Make sure that your address is visible. Place three to four inch reflective numbers on the outside of your home and mailbox to assist emergency responders in locating you.
